London's licensing rules, explained
Why the capital's clubs are few, regulated and remarkably consistent.
The SEV licence
Since 2010, English councils have licensed lap-dancing clubs as Sexual Entertainment Venues. The licence is renewed every year and sets conditions on contact, cameras, staff welfare and opening hours.
Why it matters to you
The rules are enforced by the venue's own security and by council inspection. No touching, no photographs, and dances take place in view of CCTV. In return, prices are posted and disputes are rare.
Where to go
The West End clubs are the most polished; Shoreditch and the East End are later, more relaxed and often cheaper. Stringfellows is planning a second club in Mayfair.
